The United States has upheld an incredible history of minting Silver Coins, possessing one of the most extensive mintages of the modern period.
Though there were several different kinds of coins minted in the 19th Century, the most common ones were the Silver Dollars, Halves, Quarters, Dimes, Nickel and Cents. Off course, the circulation volume was not in that order.
Silver Half Dollars, often referred to as 50 – cent pieces, were designed by Charles E. Barber and first minted in 1892. Identified as the “Barber Half Dollars”, these were made of 90% silver and 10% copper, similar to most silver coins of that time period. The mintage continued till 1915.
The following year, The United States introduced a new design for this coin: the Walking Liberty half dollar, featuring Lady Liberty walking and holding an olive branch. For this coin, the silver standard of purity was maintained at 90% throughout its mintage, lasting until 1947.
Moving forwards, the Franklin half dollar was introduced in 1948, containing 90% Silver Purity. This coin featured the Founding Father Benjamin Franklin on the obverse and Liberty Bell on the reverse and was last minted in 1963.
1964 was the year of the John F. Kennedy half dollar. This was also the last year when 90% Silver coins were minted by the United States mint.
